Frequently Asked Questions…
What is sugaring?
Sugaring is an all natural method of hair removal using only sugar, lemon, and water! It is the first known method of hair removal dating back to the ancient Egyptians. Sugaring removes hair from the root, making it last much longer than shaving and is great for anyone prone to ingrown hairs.
Does sugaring hurt?
Any time hair is being pulled out from the root, it can certainly be uncomfortable. The more you get sugared the less it hurts because the roots get weaker and the hair gets much thinner. Some find relief in taking an Advil, ibuprofen, etc. 30-45 minutes prior to their service to help minimize the pain. I also suggest avoiding caffeine or alcohol prior to your service as these will make your skin more sensitive. I have created a relaxing environment and will do my best to make it as painless as possible :)
Where on my body can I sugar?
Anywhere you’d like! The only place I don’t do is the top of the head, but anywhere from the forehead down is fair game!
How long does sugaring last?
Sugaring can last anywhere from 3-6 weeks depending on the area and how regularly you are getting sugared. The more you get sugared, the longer the results will last.
What makes sugaring different than waxing?
The biggest difference would be the ingredients. Sugaring is completely natural using only sugar, lemon, and water. We also pull the hair out in the direction of hair growth making it more gentle and the optimal choice for anyone prone to ingrowns. Sugar only adheres to the hair and dead skin (won’t pull live skin), making it less irritating on the skin. Sugar is also water soluble making it an easy clean up so you won’t leave all sticky :)
Can I shave in between appointments?
It is not advised to shave in between appointments because the hair growth cycles will start over and the hair will grow back thicker and stronger.
What do you mean by growth cycles?
Everyone’s hair has three growth cycles (anagen, catagen and telogen). The first appointment we can get the first, second, and part of the third growth cycle. If you feel stubble after your first appointment (in some cases, the first 2-3 appointments) it is the third growth cycle peeking out which is still too short to grab. After your first few appointments of pulling the hair from the root, the hairs will all be on the same growth cycle.
Is there any chance of cross-contamination?
Absolutely not! I never double dip. Anytime I go into my jar of sugar I use new gloves. I am super obsessive about cleanliness :)
I am prone to ingrown hairs, will sugaring help?
Yes! Sugaring pulls the hair out in the direction of hair growth which is helpful for anyone prone to ingrown hairs. Home care is extremely important to prevent ingrown hairs as well. At your appointment, we can discuss ways to get to the bottom of what is causing your ingrown hairs and how to prevent them. I am here to help!
Can I sugar while pregnant?
Of course!! Many pregnant women get sugared throughout the entire pregnancy. Sugaring is completely safe.
Can I sugar on my period?
That is completely up to you! Keep in mind, your body is more sensitive during this time of the month, so you may feel more discomfort than usual. However, I am more than happy to still sugar you on your period if you are comfortable with it. Just wear a tampon :)
Can I sugar if I’m using Retin-A or Accutane?
You can sugar while on Retin-A. Just stop using the Retin-A at least 3 days prior to your sugaring appointment. Accutane is a big no no for sugaring!
